Before our President and Co-Founder was a businessman, father, husband, soccer captain and world traveler, he was a Loose Juice Breakdancer. For real. He even had a trademark move with Big Tony, one of the other dance crew members. You may have seen Jake and the other LJ Breakers on State Street in Madison, WI; they would roll out their portable floor next to the Loose Juice Cart and pop, lock and drop all afternoon, earning candy money and bus fare for the trip home.
Yes, as the youngest of five boys, Jake had free reign to play in the streets and lakes of Wisconsin. He inherited his adventurous spirit from both of his parents, who encouraged him to be open to all kinds of people and experiences. One particular excursion in the ol’ family VW van ended with crashing into a ditch, at which point Jake’s jaw got to know the dashboard really well. For weeks Jake’s mouth was wired shut and he “ate” everything out of a straw. Lucky for little Jake, his loving mother was willing to blend the catch of the day, and he enjoyed trout through a straw (he claims it tasted delicious—we’re weary).
Despite his escapades as the youngest child, Jake managed to make straight A’s. His scholarly track record may have been why his classmates felt compelled to organize a bake sale; they helped raise money to send Jake and his brother Joe to Scandinavia so they could play soccer with their select team. Jake’s soccer career continued through Division I play at UMASS, where he was captain and lived in the soccer house. He caught many quips about the recorded bird sounds that came from his room—as a Fisheries and Wildlife Biology major, he learned the bird word while his buddies learned German and French.
After graduating from UMASS, Jake taught English in Madrid for seven months (he was denied his request to teach the call of Larus Smithsonianus), played a season of soccer with the Colorado Comets (which is when he also got to train with the Rapids for a month) and played with the Arizona Sahuaros. These days he spends lots of time with his wonderful wife Amy, of almost six years; plays soccer for fun on the weekends with FC Denver; and dorks out about how many similarities there are between soccer and coffee.
